Ustad Nishat Khan Casts a Spell with SitarOct 09, 2018
Strawberry Fields High School and the Society for Promotion of Indian Classical Arts and Culture Among Youth (SPIC MACAY) collaborated to bring Ustad Nishat Khan Sahib to the School for a concert in the Newton Hall. He was supported on tabla, by Ustad Rashid Mustafa.
The charismatic sitar maestro is acclaimed as the fastest sitarist in the world, and is a direct descendant of a family of musicians who trace their lineage to the court of Emperor Akbar. Having taught music at Princeton University, the teacher in him connected instantly with the students of the high school as he patiently explained to the students the finer nuances and differences between rhythm and melody and ‘taal’ and ‘ley’. The two renowned artists performed wonderful compositions in Raag Khammaj and in Raag Bilawal to explain how improvisation in Indian classical music is the key to endless creativity across genres.
The association with SPIC MACAY is one of the various means to inculcate an appreciation for Indian classical music and arts through exposure to world class artists who are invited to perform at the school regularly.
