Heritage Club Fest – Goa Liberation Day

December 23, 2021

The heritage club put up an exhibition cum fair to commemorate Goa’s liberation — “Govem Liberdade.” It was open to students from grade 4 to 8.

The exhibition unravelled the history of Goa’s liberation through pictures, illustrations of the Portuguese rule in Goa. The students moved around the exhibition, learning about Goa’s freedom struggle — Goa was liberated on 19th December 1961,14 years after India gained independence. It was recognized as an independent state in 1987. It was under Portuguese rule for 450 years ( 1510 – 1961 ) and was the capital of the entire Portuguese Empire east of the Cape of Good Hope. Goa, the small coastal area, was conquered by Afonso de Albuquerque ( 1453 – 1515 ) and became an important trade hub.

The fair had various attractions for all. There were a few games — ping pong toss, guess the weight, stack the cups which drew the attention of the crowd. There was also a tattoo making stall that was a major source of interest for the visitors. The arts and craft stall was an instant hit among the junior grades. The teachers also took part in the activities and enjoyed the fair as much as the children.

There was a small Goan dance performance by a few grade 8 students. There was a lot of enthusiasm in the air thanks to the energetic performance by the girls and they were cheered on by the  onlookers.  The  students  were  encouraged  to  dance  along, and the air was filled with Goan fervour.
