PINK WEEK

November 25, 2021

Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says I’ll try again tomorrow”.  – Audrey Hepburn

Every day, countless women across the world are fighting with breast cancer. One in every 28 women in India is diagnosed with breast cancer. Although most women may be ashamed or scared to speak about this frequently and openly, the word must be spread to increase awareness, enhance early detection, and have better cure rates.

Keeping this in mind, the students of the BWB Club and the IBDP curriculum organised a ‘Pink Week’ within our school community to give voice to the issue and raise funds to donate to a local foundation which helps with the treatment of breast cancer for women who cannot afford medical services on their own.

Pink Week, initially started with encouraging students to incorporate pink in their wardrobe to school throughout the week, to show their support for the cause as the colour code for breast cancer is Pink\Pink Ribbon. Our DP students made beautiful pink ribbons by colouring pages of discarded books from the library keeping the principle of re-use and recycle in mind to be environment friendly as well. These were distributed among the entire school community.

Three different events were organised as part of Pink Week Campaign such as a Photo Booth from the 15th to 18th of November. This was followed by a Bake Sale, which was originally planned as a 1-day event; due to the overwhelming response with all items being completely sold out within few minutes of the start of event, however, encouraged the team to extend it to Day 2 as well. The Bake Sale offered a variety of products such as cupcakes with pink icing, walnut muffins and chocolate brownies. The last event was a Treasure Hunt that was organised for all high school students. The Hunt witnessed participation of 21 teams involving 100+ students who signed up enthusiastically for the event. Everyone had a gala time hunting around for the clues all over the school campus.

Overall, the SFHS family was able to raise INR 82,290 through this initiative for breast cancer awareness and financial aid. The unflinching support from our entire school community was highly appreciated by the organising team. The strong feeling of interest and desire to be associated with such a noble cause among the students and teachers, really made the event what it is today, a huge success.

Women are constantly fighting for their lives against this disease, and research shows, early detection helps to improve cure rates, overall outcomes, and quality of life. So, to all the victims and survivors, keep fighting, and for everyone else, let’s continue to spread awareness and support any good cause as such.
